We Found Water in Tucson!

14 Jul

It wasn’t hard to find really… You just get on the highway and drive until you see a bunch of water slides! Those dark cumulus clouds were making me worry a bit on the drive to Breakers but it turned out ok. We had a few sprinkles here and there throughout the day but no thunder and no lightning. That meant more slides and more time in the wave pool! Everyone had a super great time and I think I’m the only one that got a sunburn so that’s awesome! I wasn’t able to take very many pictures… camera and phone in the wave pool = not such a great idea, but I was able to snap a few from dry ground.

Monsoon Madness… but where’s the Monsoon?

12 Jul

I was freaking out a little over the weekend about the monsoon and how we were going to have to reorganize the schedule every time it rained… but so far we haven’t had a problem! Its all sunshine and smiles this week.

The girls went on a scavenger hunt looking for science and technology all over the property and while we were out, we found some Sonoran Desert Toads in the pond! It looks like there are 7 of them and they are laying eggs everywhere! There must be at least 8,000 in the pond! It was really neat because we got to talk about how they only come out to mate 2-3 days before a rainfall of at least 1 inch and usually only during the Monsoons! You learn something every day.

The girls also learned about different clouds and made cloud pictures. At the end of the day things got a little messy… we were painting with shaving cream!

Some other highlights of the day were kayaking, swimming and making weather board games!

Mysteries of the Pond

10 Jun

Dude! We hiked all the way out to the pond and it was all dried up! It just had a layer of slime on it… ewww. But it was fun to look at for a little while. Makes you think about all the little animals that live at the Hacienda. I wonder where they are getting their drinking water from if our ponds are all dried up? I wonder if they all travel over to the Golf Course to get their water? I wonder where we would have to get our drinking water from if we depended on the water at the Hacienda. Both ponds were dried up and so we ended up at the pond behind the Straw Bale house where there was a really neat layer of some organism with cool things growing on it. Sweet! :) I’ll try and upload some pictures a little later!

TFS Installs Water Cistern with Girl Scout Campers

10 Jun

Technicians for Sustainability came to Girl Scout Camp on Tuesday and helped girls understand why we need to save water. Leona talked about where our water comes from, the aquifer, the water cycle and how doing silly things like leaving the water running while brushing our teeth is depleting our water source. The girls had a discussion about how they could save water and were very honest about wasting water themselves! Then, TFS took the girls outside to show them our new cistern that will harvest rainwater from the Bunkhouse! After a brief introduction to how it all works, the girls got to help install it! Very cool way to learn about the Wonders of Water!

It’s Summer! Are you going to Camp?

2 Jun

Camps are still OPEN! We are kicking off the season on Monday with Wonders of Water! Girls will learn to LOVE, SHARE, and SAVE water! They’ll help install a cistern for rainwater harvesting at the Bunk House, spend a day at the water park and learn everything there is to know about water! (or at least all that you can learn in 5 days!)

You might be missing out on Wonders of Water, but there’s still time to register for Express Yourself Art Camp starting next week, Summit Hut Outdoor Adventure Camp starting on the 21st and all of our July camps including Camp Surf, Desert Divas, Monsoon Madness, and Future Fashionistas!

See you all at Camp! It’s Your Summer~ Love it!
